Choose My Lawyer
Transparency CentreWhat happens after selecting a firm

After reviewing your results, you can take the next step in one of two ways.

You can either:

  • select one firm and ask Choose My Lawyer to send your details to that firm; or
  • request callbacks from up to three firms if you would like to speak to firms before deciding whether to proceed.

If you select a firm

If you click Select, we will show you a short summary of your transaction and the price shown for that firm.

We will also explain whether the price is estimated or verified and link you to information about what is included and excluded.

We will then ask you for your contact information so the firm can get in touch with you. This will include your name, email address and telephone number. We may also ask for the relevant property postcode so the firm can understand the transaction more clearly.

Before anything is sent, you must actively confirm that you consent to Choose My Lawyer sharing your contact details and transaction details with the selected firm.

The firm will then contact you directly.

Before it does so it will first complete a conflict check to confirm whether they can act. Either way, we expect the firm to tell you whether they can or cannot act by the next working day.

If they can act for you then you should receive the firm's client care letter and terms of business within three working days of submitting your Select request. Signing and returning those documents to the firm allows you to formally appoint them as your lawyers for the transaction.

We will send you a copy of your search results as sent to the firm. We will also follow up with you to check that contact was made and to see what you thought of the firm. This will help improve the quality of information shown to future users.

If you request a callback

If you click Request a callback, you can ask up to three firms from your results to contact you.

We will show you a short summary of your transaction, the firms selected and the prices shown for those firms.

We will then ask you for your contact information so the firms can get in touch with you. This will include your name, email address, telephone number and preferred callback window.

Before anything is sent, you must actively confirm that you consent to Choose My Lawyer sharing your contact details and transaction details with the selected firms.

The selected firms will aim to contact you during your chosen callback window where possible. If contact is unsuccessful, firms will make one further attempt during normal business hours on the following working day.

Before they do so firms will first complete a conflict check to confirm whether they can act. Either way, we expect firms to contact you to tell you whether they can or cannot act.

We will send you a copy of the details sent to the selected firms.

We will also follow up with you to check whether contact was made and if you selected any of those firms to act for you. If you didn't, we will send you your search results again so you can continue exploring your options.

Price feedback

Please check whether the final price remains consistent with the price shown through Choose My Lawyer.

The price may legitimately change if circumstances change (see our articles on Understanding searches and Understanding additional costs and disbursements for more information about cost changes), but if that happens we expect the firm to explain this to you at the time.

We may ask for feedback later about your experience, including whether the price changed, the reasons for that and whether this was explained clearly.

This helps us identify market pricing patterns and improve the quality of information shown to future users.

Choose My Lawyer does not decide whether a firm's pricing approach is right or wrong.

CML organises and explains. You decide.
